The best time to protect factory paint is before careless washing, environmental contamination and daily wear begin to accumulate. But “protect it immediately” does not mean “buy the most expensive package immediately.”
First, inspect the new car
New does not always mean defect-free. Transportation, dealership washing and outdoor storage can leave light swirl marks, water spotting, adhesive residue or contamination. Inspect the car in direct sunlight and under focused lighting. Any defects should be documented and handled before a coating or film hides access to the paint.
Map your real-world risks
Highway distance and road debris
If you spend substantial time at speed behind other vehicles, frontal impact risk rises. A physical film is designed for that particular job. If most travel is urban and appearance is the priority, a seamless coating may align better with your needs.
Outdoor parking and weather exposure
Sun, airborne pollution, bird droppings, tree sap, mineral-rich water and monsoon contamination all affect a finish. Prompt cleaning and a durable protective surface help reduce the time contaminants remain directly against factory paint.
How the car will be washed
Many swirl marks are created during washing—not driving. Dry wiping dust, dirty cloths and aggressive brushes drag particles across the finish. No protection product makes poor washing harmless. Safe washing is part of the protection system.
Understand the three broad choices
Ceramic coating
Consider ceramic when water behaviour, easier maintenance and added shine are your main goals. Ask about realistic coating thickness, preparation, inspection requirements and what the warranty actually covers.
Paint protection film
Consider PPF when physical impact protection is the dominant concern. Ask to see completed cars in person. Examine edges, corners, texture and clarity, and understand the film’s replacement process and written warranty.
IconRockLear
Consider IconRockLear when you want a seamless finish, greater coating build than conventional ceramics, exceptional gloss and a long-term approach to preserving the painted surface. It is not ceramic coating and should not be confused with film.
Ask every installer these questions
- Will you inspect and measure the paint before starting?
- What preparation is included in the quoted price?
- Who performs the installation, and what training have they completed?
- What damage is—and is not—covered?
- Are annual paid inspections required?
- What happens if one panel is scratched or repainted?
- What exact aftercare must I follow?
Do not ignore long-term appearance
A protection product becomes part of how your car looks. Film texture, coating gloss, paint clarity and the quality of preparation are visible every day. View real work under sunlight, not only edited studio videos.
The right solution is the one whose strengths match your actual use. Make the decision once you understand the trade-offs—not because a salesperson presents one product as perfect.
